With one of the most entertaining drinking weeks coming up, I’m going to be posting a number of cocktails over the next few days to celebrate both the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo. We’re starting off with a Rye take on the classic Derby drink, the Mint Julep.
- 3 oz of Slow & Low Rye Whiskey
1/2 oz of Simple Syrup, Preferably Demerara
Lots of mint—10 springs mint (Reserve 1 sprig for garnish)
Copper, steel or aluminum cup
Method: Muddle whiskey and mint in a mix glass.Add 1 large cube of ice. Stir, but not so much as to dilute – a bakers dozen revolutions. Add liberal amounts of crushed ice to more than fill the tin cup.Fine strain contents of mix into a glass over crushed ice. Garnish w 6 mint leaves.
So it’s not only National Beer Day, but it’s also National Tartan Day. To celebrate, you, naturally, need to drink Scotch. Like, right now. Here’s a cocktail option for you to celebrate and get your night started right—drunkenly.
Dewar’s Rob Roy
- 3 parts DEWAR’S 12 Blended Scotch Whisky
- 2 1/2 parts Martini & Rossi Rosso vermouth
- 2 dashes bitters
- 2 dashes simple syrup
- 1 cherry
Method: Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a cherry.
Also, if you’re in NYC, head to these bars and get rowdy.

I know, I know. It’s National Beer Day, but sometimes I’m not feeling a beer—mostly because I drank beer last night and sometimes you have to mix it up. Anyway. Best Damn, which does one of the best hard root beers I’ve had (read: it doesn’t make me feel like I’m getting diabetes when I drink it), has just put out a hard Cherry Cola.
Now, if you’re like me, and that Savage Garden song was your jam circa 1997, this is the beer alternative for you. I’ve included a recipe below, but drinking it on its own is great, too. Dangerous, though, because it goes down smooth. I was surprised with how much I enjoyed it, to be honest, but I’m a fan now.
The biggest game in college basketball is here, so what else is there to do but mix up a drink, turn it on, and get wild. Mix these up and the [Tar Heels or Wildcats] won’t be the only winners tonight!
- 1.5 oz. 1800 Silver
- 0.5 oz. Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice
- 0.5 oz. Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
- 0.5 oz. Lime Juice Cordial
- 0.25 oz. Green Chartreuse
Method: Shake with ice and strain into an ice-filled rocks glass.
The Tarheel Three Pointer
- 2 oz Jose Cuervo Especial Silver
- 1/4 oz shot triple sec
- 1/4 oz shot Bols Blue Curacao Liqueur
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
Method: Shake with ice and strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.
The Buzzer Beater
- 1.5 oz. Captain Morgan Cannon Blast
- 0.5 oz. Cranberry Juice
Method: Shake with ice and strain into a shot glass.
- 1.3 oz. George Dickel Rye Whisky
- 0.5 oz. lemon juice
- 0.25 oz. ginger syrup
- 1 tsp. simple syrup
- 0.75 oz. sparkling water
- Mint leaves
Method: Muddle, shake, and double-strain into a punch glass or coupe.
So, sometimes it’s okay to forgo booze and just get all pumped up on Red Bull. With March Madness at its height, there’s no better time to feel all that energy coursing through your veins as your team (or, at least, the team that you put as a winner in the office pool) is taking the other to task. Or something like that.
Anyway, here are four Red Bull cocktails for all your sports-watching needs.
Orange Sunset Swish
- 1/2 Jalapeño Pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon Grenadine Syrup
- 3/4 cup Red Bull Orange Edition
- Lime Wedge
Method: Gently muddle the jalapeño and grenadine syrup in a hi-ball glass. Add ice, pour Red Bull Orange Edition into glass and stir all contents together. Squeeze lime wedge over beverage.
- 3/4 cup Piña Colada Mix
- 1 cup (8oz) of chopped strawberries
- 2 whole strawberries
- 1/2 cup Red Bull Yellow Edition
- 2 cups of ice
Method: With the exception of the 2 whole strawberries, place all ingredients into a blender and blend for 10 seconds. Pour into (2) 16 oz Hurricane glasses and garnish each glass with 1 whole strawberry.
Blackberry Buzzer Beater
- 6 blackberries, reserve 1 for garnish
- 1 inch chunk of ginger root, peeled
- Juice of 1/2 lemon
- 1/2 cup Red Bull Blue Edition
Method: Muddle the 5 blackberries and ginger in a low-ball glass. Pour lemon juice to mixture and Red Bull Blue Edition into glass and add ice. Stir all contents together and garnish with a blackberry.
Cosmic Red Rebound
- 8 red seedless grapes
- 2 basil leaves
- Juice of 1/2 orange
- 1/4 cup Red Bull Red Edition
- 1 orange slice for garnish
Method: Muddle the red seedless grapes and two basil leaves in a cocktail shaker. Add the orange juice and ice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Pour drink into a martini glass. Top with 2 oz Red Bull Red Edition and garnish with an orange slice.
Method: Build and garnish with sprig of fresh smacked mint.
- 2 oz. Nolet’s Silver Dry Gin
- .5 oz Simple Syrup
- .75 oz Lime Juice
Method: Build in a Collins glass, muddle gently, fill with crushed ice, top with soda and garnish with mint.
- 1 part Midori Melon Liqueur
- 1 part Cruzan Aged Light Rum
- Juice of 1 Lime
- Melon Balls or Lime Wheels
Method: Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass with an optional sugared rim. Garnish with a melon ball and/or lime wheel on the rim.
This one is just in time to celebrate while watching the Miami Open.
- 4 oz Moët & Chandon Ice Impérial
- 2 oz Grapefruit Juice
- 1 oz St. Germain
- Pinch of salt
- 6 mint leaves
- 4 quarter wedges grapefruit
Method: In a large rocks or wine glass, pour grapefruit juice and St. Germain over ice. Stir in the salt, mint and grapefruit wedges. Top with Moët Ice.
(I may not be making a bracket, but I could get into March Madness if it was made entirely of cocktails like this.)

- 13 oz. The Famous Grouse
- 6.5 oz. The Famous Mint Tea
- 1 bottle Bordeaux Red Wine
- 3.25 oz. St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram
- 3 Naval or Blood Oranges
- 13 Whole Star Anise Pods
Method: Using a microplane grater remove the zest from 2 of the oranges over a pot or slow cooker. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer. As soon as it begins to simmer, lower the heat to the low setting. After 5 minutes, serve into punch or tea cups.
Use a channel knife to cut the orange into twists and add 1 to each drink with a star anise pod.
